Electron Beam Melt-brazing of Hard Alloy to Steel with Ni-Fe Interlayer

A study of hard alloy to steel welding by electron beam melt-brazing was carried out.The weld was composed mainly of molten steel, while the brittle compound ηphase formed easily at the fusion line near the hard alloy.Longitudinal macroscopic cold cracks occurred at the heat affected zone of the hard alloy under welding deformation and stress induced by the non-centered welding.According to the metallurgical compatibility principle, cold cracks can be avoided by a powder metallurgy Ni-Fe interlayer during hard alloy to steel welding by electron beam melt-brazing.The weld microstructure was composed of a Ni-based solid solution with interlayer addition that was capable of optimizing the weld composition, avoiding the brittle ηphase compounds, decreasing the weld hardness and enhancing coordination deformation of the weld.
