Synergistic Reinforcing Effect of Silica Nanoparticlemwcnt Hybrids on the Epoxy-Based Composites
Synergistic reinforcing effect of silica nanoparticle loaded multi walled carbon nanotube (SiO2-MWCNT) hybrids on the epoxy-based composites was investigated in details in this paper. The SiO2-MWCNT swere successfully prepared by multi-step chemical functionalization, which were characterized with FTIR,XPS,SEM and TEM.Tensile strength and modulus of the epoxy reinforced and ILSS of CF/EP composites were improved by SiO2-MWCNTs,reaching the maximu value at the SiO2-MWCNT loading of 0.50 wt.%.This was due to the improved dispersion state of MWCNTs and synergistic reinforcing effect of silica nanoparticles and MWCNTs.It was observed from SEM images that SiO2-MWCNTs act as the bridging between the carbon fibers, which was benefical to enhancing the interficial adhesion of carbon fiber and epxoy matrix.Addtionally, the mechanical properties of epoxy composites were calculated based on finite element model, which was quite close to the experimental data.Thus,SiO2-MWCNT hybrid was an effective reinforcement for high performance composites.
