Delamination Propagation Behavior and Fracture Toughness of Composite Laminates Subjected to a Concentrated Load
Fracture resistance of interface of composite laminates under shear fracture mode was experimentally studied during stable damage propagation.A load was applied at the center of an elliptical embedded delamination in cross-ply Carbon/Epoxy composite laminates, where the delamination stably grew without the influence of free edge.Energy release rate was numerically calculated for measured shapes of delaminations by using finite element method. This method enables us to investigate the dependence of fracture toughness on the fiber direction with respect to the crack propagation as well as interaction with other damage such as crack deflection to the other interface and matrix crack so on.
