Surface Characteristics of Carbon Fiber and Its Interfacial Shear Strength Measured By Single Fiber Fragmentation Test
The single fiber fragmentation test was performed to evaluate interfacial shear strength of carbon fiber/ epoxy resin monofilament composite.Besides, surface characterization by AFM and XPS was undertaken. It was found that the surface topography of the sizing carbon fibers studied appears to consist of grooves along the fiber axial direction.Sizing increases the roughness of fibers surface by 132.2% and improves chemical activity with higher O/C rate. Therefore, the samples of sizing fiber show sharp a X-type birefringence in the single fiber fragmentation test, and IFSS of the sizing fiber/ epoxy resin monofilament composite is 74.10 MPa,presenting 122% higher than desizing fiber.
