Monitoring Secondary Bending Failure Under Tension Load Using Fiber Bragg Grating

Secondary bending that create peeling failure in the structure which it have different stiffness become a potential problem in the fully composite structure. The type of failure can start with slightly load and mostly difficult to inspect using conventional methods. And using fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) was important in this case because FBG can be directly embedded into the structure. This research intended to monitor and characterized damage caused secondary bending of the skin stringer which is simplified in the form of skin stiffened in tension load.FBG is embedded between skin and stiffened and placed near the edge of stiffened as the most critical.FBG has successfully detected and characterized damage caused by secondary bending failure and could predict the damage growth quantitatively.Spectrum graph as a result of FBG reading can be used to replace conventional mechanical graph to follow the mechanical behavior of the structure.
