Fabrication of buckypaper And Buckypaper/epoxy Composites
Very small diameter,large aspect ratio,extremely high strength and stiffness naturally make the carbon nanotube (CNT) become a kind of most attractive reinforcement for polymer matrix composites.Many efforts have been carried out to develop CNT reinforced composites in the past over 20 years.However,it is recognized that there is still a long way to go in order to create CNT reinforced composites which fully realize the potentials of high stiffness and high strength of CNT.Only few papers reported that CNT/polymer composites with high strength and high stiffness,which is comparable with the conventional carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP),can be fabricated using spinnable multi-walls CNT (MWCNTs) forest.Most of researches have not presented anticipated macroscopic properties such as high stiffness and strength although the individual CNTs have excellent mechanical properties.There are many reasons which may influence the macroscopic mechanical properties of nanocomposites,such as the dispersion,alignment,and waviness of CNTs.Referring to conventional CFRP,it is understand that unidirectionally alignment and high volume fraction of CNTs are two key issues to create high stiffness and high strength CNT/polymer composites.In this paper,a buckypaperbased fabrication method of CNT/polymer composites is studied.Effects of fabrication processes of buckypaper and buckypaper/epoxy composite on their mechanical properties are investigated using not spinnable single-wall CNT (SWCNT).
