Interaction Between Cr & Mos2 and Effect on Mechanical Properties & Microstructure of Cu-Based Friction Material

Copper matrix composites consisting of Cr and CrFe as strengthening elements and molybdenum disulphide as lubricant have been sintered in gas mixtures of nitrogen and hydrogen atmosphere. We focused on the interaction between Cr and MoS2 and its effect on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Cu-based friction material. The results show that S elements derived from the decomposition of MoS2 reacted with Cr forming CrxSy compounds, which resulted in an increase in hardness and a decrease in compression strength of Cu-based friction material. When Cr was substituted by CrFe,the reaction between Cr and S was inhibited, and moderate properties of hardness, porosity and strength for friction material were obtained.
