Processing of Carbon/Aluminum Composites by Low Pressure Infiltration

In order to obtain unidirectional carbon fiber /aluminum composites by low pressure infiltration (LPI) of molten aluminum with under 0.8MPa,cupper (Cu) particles containing carbon fiber preform was developed by spark plasma sintering. In order to improve the density, the optimization of size of Cu particles was examined.30vol% carbon fiber / aluminum composites with over 95 % in relative density was obtained by infiltration of molten aluminum with 0.8MPa in applied pressure to the porous preform. The thermal conductivity (TC) of the composites was 273.2 w/mK along longitudinal direction of fiber, which is suitable for application of heat-sink.
