Investigation of the Solubility Between Polylactic Acid and Poly(Methyl Methacrylate)and Morphology of Their Composite
Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs) were used for predicting compatibility between two materials.HSPs are δD,δP and δH,which quantitatively represent three major types of interactions in common organic materials: nonpolar interaction, permanent dipole and hydrogen bonding respectively.PMMA was selected as the organic film for fiber treatment because of its high physical affinity with PLA as predicted by the HSPs.The PLA-PMMA composites with the desired compositions were prepared. The mixtures were formed into specimens using an injection molding machine.Rice straw fiber (RSF) was treated by admicellar polymerization which coated a PMMA film on the surface in order to improve the adhesion of treated RSF (TRSF) and PLA matrix. The formation of the organic film was determined by FTIR and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements. The mechanical properties and SEM were used to characterize the interfacial adhesion of the composites.
