Low-Cost Jute-based Carbon Fibers and the Structure Evolution During Pre-Oxidation

Low-cost jute-based carbon fibers (JBCFs) are fabricated after pre-oxidation and carbonization. The evolution of chemical structure and crystal structure of jute fibers during pre- oxidation are investigated by DSC,FTIR,elemental analysis,XRD,linear density, tensile strength and SEM.Proper pre-oxidation temperature range (250℃ - 340℃) is obtained. At 250℃,significant oxidation occurs, the C=O functional groups of jute fibers increases to maximum.Meanwhile, typical cellulose crystal structure disappears and a new aromatic structure appears. As the temperature rises from 250℃ to 340℃,the C=O functional groups gradually lose while the aromatic structure steadily develops.Tensile strength of JBCFs is in proportion to Aromatic Index calculated from XRD,rather than the content of C=O groups. The highest tensile strength of JBCFs can reach to 224.7±61.1MPa.
