Relationship Between Surface Chemistry of CFand Moisture Absorption Behavior of CF/Epoxy Composites

Structural changes of CF(carbon fiber) surface in the process of electrochemical oxidation were monitored by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).A relationship between surface chemistry of carbon fibers and moisture absorption behavior of carbon fiber/epoxy composites was researched. Results showed that electrochemical oxidation could get rid of the contaminants on carbon fiber surface and also lead to a large increase in the percentage of polar elements.Surface chemistry of carbon fibers had a significant influence on the moisture uptake of carbon fiber/epoxy composites, and the active carbon fiber surface is,the higher its reinforced composites got saturated moisture uptake.Carbon fiber/epoxy bond increased after electrochemical oxidation and hygrothermal aging could damage the interfacial region of composites.
