DESIGN AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF A MINIATURE MICRO-CHANNEL PLATE HEAT EXCHANGER
A miniature microchannel plate heat exchanger is developed and tested. The miniature heat exchanger is designed to be used in miniature vapor-compression refrigeration systems for personal cooling applications. The miniature heat exchanger is made of 39 layers of stainless steel plate. Each plate is 0.7mm thick and has parallel channels that are 350μm deep and 350μm wide. The channels on the stainless steel plates are formed by photochemical etching process. The etched stainless steel sheets are then laminated together and welded by vacuum diffusion bonding process. The final outline dimensions of the miniature heat exchanger are 48.3×21.1×27.3mm.A series of experiments are done to study the performances of the heat exchanger in evaporating mode in a miniature vapor-compression refrigeration system. The refrigerant used during the tests is R-134a and the other fluid is water. The test results indicate that when used as an evaporator, the microchannel heat exchanger can yield a cooling capacity of about 300 watts, which is big enough for personal cooling applications.
