AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE OPTIMAL INTERMEDIATE TEMPERATURE OF A CASCADE REFRIGERATION SYSTEM WITH R134a AND R410A
The performance optimization of a cascade refrigeration system which uses R134a and R410A as refrigerants is investigated. This cascade system is designed for a water heating purpose and intended to overcome weaknesses of a conventional heat pump water heater. One of the most essential issues in a cascade refrigeration system is to find an optimal intermediate temperature, that is to say the evaporating temperature of a high-temperature cycle, which allows the whole system to perform at its best efficiency. In this paper,an experimental study to obtain the optimal temperature is conducted for various conditions. The condensing temperature of a high-temperature cycle, the evaporating temperature of a low-temperature cycle and the temperature difference in a cascade heat exchanger are selected as major parameters and experiments are carried out when those variables are changed to several reasonable values. The effect of an intermediate temperature on the system performance and that of operating parameters on optimal conditions are investigated. In addition, experimental results are compared with the optimal temperature from an existing correlation which is obtained by the theoretical analysis.
