Production of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) by Alcaligenes eutrophus ATCC 17697T from Various Concentrations of Carbon Dioxide
The characteristics of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate),P(3HB),and the production by an autotrophic culture ofAlcaligenes eutrophus ATCC 17697T using a range of concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) under the nitrogen-limited condition were investigated in this study. For the 6 d cultivation in a mineral medium with nitrogen, the growth with respect to the CO2 concentration was in order of 1>3>10> 20% CO2.After 96 h of the nitrogen-limited cultivation, the cell concentrations decreased by 1.2,1.15,0.87,and 0.75 g/L at the CO2 concentration of 1,3,10 and 20% CO2,respectively.The P(3HB) accumulation in the cells also decreased with the increase in the CO2 concentration. The final P(3HB) contentswere 56.8,56.1,52.5,and 47.1% at 1,3,10 and 20% CO2,respectively.The results from this study will contribute towards the process development for the CO2 conversion using microorganisms.
