Photocatalytic Bacterial Disinfection in a Partition System

Photocatalytic disinfection has been well-studied for water treatment. However, the post-separation ofphotocatalyst remains a major challenge for practical application. This study developed a novel method for photocatalytic disinfection, which used a partition system to retain the photocatalyst.Cadmium indium sulfate (CdIn2S4) coupled with regenerated cellulose membrane gave the best performance.4 log-reduction of a Gram-negative bacterium,Escherichia coli, and 5 log-reduction of a Gram-positive bacterium,Microbacterium Barkeri,(initial cell density 2× 105 cells/mL) were achieved within 4 and 6 h,respectively.Scavenger study revealed that H2O2 is the major reactive species for bacterial inactivation in the partition system. The study provides an alternative cost-effective method for the application of photocatalysis in water disinfection.
