Pollution of Mariculture Areas and Environmental Protection in Chinese Coastal Waters
In the past 30 years, mariculture has made important contributions to the national economy of China,to the security of food resources and the global food supply.Chinese mariculture has ranked first in the world from the end of 1980s.In 2009,the total mariculture production reached 14.052 million tons. The rapid development of mariculture is accompanied by environmental degradation, eutrophication, and high frequency records of red tides.Within the mariculture sector, the culture of the red agarophyte,Gracilaria lemaneiformis, has also rapidly expanded in the past 10 years. This seaweed grows very well in Chinese coastal waters. In laboratory experiments, the removal of NHa-N decreased 85.53 % and 69.45%,and the concentrations of PO4-P decreased 65.97 % and 26.74% with Gracilaria after 23 days and 40 days,respectively.G.lemaneiformis is very effective in decreasing N and P loadings. Also, the seaweed is able to inhibit the growth of some microalgae.Large-scale Gracilaria cultivation can be an effective means of environmental protection in Chinese costal waters.
