Investigation on Filtration Rate and Subsequent Nutrient Removal by Green Mussel Perna viridis

Green mussels (Perna viridis) effectively clean coastal waters by removing nutrients from seawater through phytoplankton consumption. This investigation evaluates green mussel filtration rates and attempts to correlate these with the amount of phytoplankton consumed by kinetic modeling. Results can assist in understanding nutrient removal rates by estimating carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus contents in the phytoplankton cells. Two ranges of mussel size (2.8-3.0 and 6.8-7.0 cm) were selected and individually cultured in filtered seawater.Pure cultures of the unicellular diatom Chaetoceros calcitrans (C.calcitrans) were added and chlorophyll a concentration was monitored as C.calcitrans cells remaining.Seawater volumes were varied to yield 0.5,1,5 and 10 L/mussel.C.calcitrans cells were analyzed for CNP content. Results indicated that the filtration behaviors of both small and large mussels were found to be similar. The increase in seawater volume per g DW tissue resulted in higher filtration rate at both sizes until a maximum plateau at 10.37 L/hr*g DW tissue. For the 7 cm mussels at a volume of seawater 5 L/mussel (3.37 L/g DW tissue) the filtration rate were found to be 0.94 L/hr*g DW tissue.Based on consumption of phytoplankton, nutrient uptake by green mussels is calculated.Carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus contents of C.calcitrans were determined at 34.86,4.35and 1.09 pg/cell,respectively.Thus,carbon,nitrogen and phosphorous removal by green mussels were found effective at a minimum rate of 3.93,0.49 and 0.12 mg/day*g DW tissue, respectively.
