Effects of the Reaction Conditions on Intermediates in Catalytic Wet Oxidation of Phenol
Catalytic wet oxidation of phenol was studied at various conditions.The effects of reaction conditions on the concentration histories of the intermediates were investigated.It shows that both Ru/C and Ru/ZrO2-CeO2 exhibited excellent activity in catalytic wet oxidation of phenol.Complete mineralization of phenol could not be obtained with both catalysts.In the oxidation of phenol with Ru/ZrO2-CeO2 main intermediates were including hydroquinone,p-benzoquinone,maleic acid,fumaric acid,Cis butenedioic anhydride,acrylic acid,malonic acid,oxalic aci,acetic acid and formic acid.The reaction conditions had great effect on the distribution of intermediates during the reaction.The oxygen storage capacity of ZrO2-CeO2 enhanced the activity of Ru/ZrO2-CeO2 for carboxylic acid oxidation.Reaction temperature was the most significant factor influencing both phenol conversion and intermediates distribution.The effect of pressure on phenol conversion was relatively small compared to the temperature,but the effect of it on the concentration history of intermediates was noticeable.Initial pH mainly influenced phenol chemistry and the concentration of radicals and thus influenced the concentration histories of intermediates.High initial pH can improve phenol conversion but decrease the oxidation rate of carboxylic acid.High initial phenol concentration resulted in more polymeric products adsorbed on the surface of Ru/ZrO2-CeO2 and thus decreased the transformation rate of phenol and organic acids.
