Disseminated PGE-Cu-Ni sulfide mineralization within the Rietfontein deposit,Eastern Limb,Bushveld Complex,South Africa:Implications for the formation of the Platreef
Core samples from eight drill holes from the Rietfontein PGE-Cu-Ni prospect on the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Complex were selected to investigate the style and causes of mineralization and to compare it with the mineralogically and geochemically similar Platreef deposits of the Northern Limb. The bulk of the mineralization is strongly stratigraphically controlled, lying at the base of a gabbronorite unit which overlies a marginal norite sequence. The melt compositions of the main units at Rietfontein are enriched in LREE and have positive Nb and Ti anomalies, features which are characteristic of crustal contamination.Furthermore, plots of (Nb/Th)PM vs (Th/Yb)PM indicate that both gabbronorite and norite magmas had assimilated crustal material before emplacement. This indicates that crustal contamination, and therefore potentially sulfide saturation, occurred prior to emplacement of the Rietfontein intrusion.
