Geology of Cu and PGE mineralization in the Eastern Gabbro,Coldwell Alkaline Complex,Canada
The Eastern Gabbro is an arcuate composite intrusion that is up to 1.5 km thick, which wraps around the eastern and northern boundaries of the Mid Continent Rift-related Coldwell Alkaline Complex near the town of Marathon,Ontario. The Eastern Gabbro consists of the Fine Grained Series, which is cross-cut by the Marathon Series, and overlain by the Layered Series.Copper and PGE mineralization at the Marathon deposit are hosted by the Marathon Series,a diverse group of co-magmatic sills and pod-shaped bodies that intruded the Fine Grained Series near the basal contact with partially melted Archean footwall. The Marathon Series comprises three rock types: a) Two Duck Lake gabbro,b) a newly recognized augite troctolite to wehrlite sill that overlies the TDL gabbro, and c) numerous oxide melatroctolite to apatite olivine clinopyroxenite sill-like to pod-shaped bodies (Cpx-Mt-Ol-Ap cumulates) now recognized as being members of the Marathon Series (Figure 2).The older Fine Grained Series exhibits high Zr/Nb and low Ce/Yb,which are very similar to the values for the tholeiitic sills of the Mid Continent Rift, and are distinct from the Layered and Marathon Series, which exhibit lower Zr/Nb and higher Ce/Yb.
