PGE mineralisation in the Fazenda Mirabela intrusion,Bahia State,Brazil:distribution of PGE in base metal sulphides and PGM
Recent active mining of the Santa Rita Ni-Cu-sulphide deposit in the Fazenda Mirabela intrusion in Bahia,Brazil, has led to renewed interest in the formation of this deposit (Barnes et al.2011).However the distribution of platinum-group elements (PGE) between platinum-group minerals (PGM) and solid solution in base metal sulphides (BMS) has not yet been studied.Three different PGM assemblages have been identified;(i) Pt-Pd-Ni tellurides in the central zone of the Santa Rita deposit,(ii) sperrylite (PtAs2) with Pt-Pd-Ni-Cu tellurides in the northern and southern zones and (iii) Pd alloys below the Santa Rita deposit locally in S-poor footwall dunite. In the Santa Rita ore zone Pd is concentrated in pentlandite while Ru and Os are present in both pentlandite and pyrite.Below the Santa Rita ore zone in the S-poor dunite footwall, minor BMS are extremely enriched in PGE showing that the distribution of PGE between PGM and BMS is variable throughout the host intrusion.
