Fabrication and Mechanical Evaluation of Woven Silk-Polyester Blended Small Diameter Prototype Arterial Prostheses
Small diameter artificial blood vessels were widely used in replacing or repairing carotid, coronary and renal arteries.Success has been achieved in the large diameter arterial prostheses. The main problem that the small diameter arterial prostheses face was the mismatch of the sizes and the mechanical properties between the host arteries and the artificial ones.Furthermore, the small diameter arterial grafts should have good biocompatibility, namely the hemocompatibility and the cytocompatibility. For these reasons, this study chose silk and PET yarns,to take advantage of the good biocompatibility of silk fibrion and the excellent mechanical properties of PET.The small diameter arterial grafts were woven on a special loom, the diameter of the seamLess grafts could be controlled under 4 mm.Moreover, after degumminng and heat setting, sericin could be removed efficiently and the samples could be set as open tubular ones. The circumferential strength of the PET-silk bicomponent prostheses and pure PET ones were 55 N/mm and 59 N/mm respectively,as the probe bursting strength,12 N/mm2 and 12.4 N/mm2 severally. The strength of the samples, namely the circumferential strength and the bursting strength, was higher than the Goretex ePTFE commercial devices.Besides, the water permeability of the samples were evaluated, the values of both the samples are under 110 mL/cm2 · min, which means that the samples could be implanted without preclotting.
