Identifying the Factors Influencing Formation of Nanoporous Electrospun Poly(L-lactic acid) Fibers

In tissue engineering research, cell behavior can be modulated by the scaffold topography that resembles the dimensional scaleof the native extracellular matrix. To explore the cellular influence of nanopores presented on a kind of biomimicking ultrafine fibers by electrospinning, this work was firstly designed to identify some key factors that govern the formation of nanoporous morphology on a model scaffolding polymer poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) in electrospinning. It was found that higher solution concentrations, higher ambient humidity, lower applied voltage, andsolvents of lower boiling pointsare all in favor of forming nanopores with tailorable pore size and quantity. An underlying mechanism likely responsible for the formation of nanopores on the electrospun PLLA nanofiber was also proposed.
