Student Experiences of Using an E-Book Within a Higher Education Context:A Pilot Project

This paper describes a study that explored students experiences of using an e-book in a human resource management course. The study was undertaken among second year management students in a South African university. The findings revealed that the majority of the students prefer the VirtualBook(R) than a hard copy,The majority of students were also of the opinion that it was easy to learn how to use the VirtualBook(R) The students were divided on their opinions that the activities in the VirtualBook(R) made them feel more actively engaged and felt that they would prefer the course to go back to having four lectures a week and not use the VirtualBook(R) activities.Students were also dissatisfied with accessibility issues and the small size of the VirtualBook(R) on the computer screen. From the findings one senses a level of resistance to this new learning technology which required students to be more active participants in their own learning.A recommendation would be to implement e-learning initiatives as change management initiatives and accept that there will be some resistance with those involved.
