Chinese College Students Tense Preference in Written English
This paper provides a corpus-based contrastive analysis of Chinese college students tense preference in written English. The distribution of eight major tenses in Brown Corpus and CLEC are fist calculated, and then a comparative study of the tense distribution in the two corpora is done.A questionnaire is also conducted to look into the causes for tense preference in Chinese college students written production. The major findings are:Simple present tense and present progressive tense are much preferred by Chinese students in temporal expression, other tense types less favored. And this might be attributed to the complexity and acquisition order of a particular tense,L1 transfer and avoidance strategy etc.
