Numerical simulation of steel plate processed by shot-peening
The investigation is devoted to simulate the surface roughness, plastic deformation, and residual stress resulting from shot-peening using a single ball against a flat steel plate.A sub-program for random impact was developed to analyze the effects of the repeated impacts on the process. The contact between the shot and the plate was modeled using contact elements with the penalty function type. Moreover, three relative issues were discussed. The first is concerned with the effect of the shot velocity, the second with the shot size, and the third with the friction between the shot and the plate upon the plastic zone development and unloading residual stress. The results reveal that the important role played by the shot size and shot velocity, but to a much lesser extent by the friction. In addition,we obtained that the value of the surface roughness, the effective plastic strain, and the x-stress will be saturated at the fifth impact number, from then on,the results will be changed slightly with the increasing of the impact numbers.
