CFD ANALYSIS OF PRESSURE BUILD UP PROTECTION SYSTEM IN AN INDUSTRIAL SPRAY DRYER

  Risk of dust explosion during drying process is still a huge problem for industrial safety.Application of control ventilation prevents dryer‘s destruction if explosion is triggered.During explosion safety vent opens after exceeding assumed static pressure.Typical approach to calculate dust explosion problem in a closed volume is to replace dust with flammable gas mixture which enables investigation and monitoring of pressure,velocity,temperature,etc.during explosion process.CFD technique was applied to calculate sudden pressure increase that accompanies explosion in a closed space as well as to describe performance of the safety vents installed in the dryer.An air-methane mixture was found appropriate to simulate the behavior of a detergent powder and to be applied in the CFD calculations.The aim of this work was to elaborate a CFD mathematical model of a dust explosion in a closed volume with and without safety vents and to analyze different localizations and different geometry of a safety vent.Four sets of CFD calculations of dust explosion in industrial spray tower were carried out at constant and variable gas concentration for closed or opened safety vents.Results of calculations allowed to determine the position and parameters of venting devices which should be installed to minimize the risk of damages of the dryer construction.
