DAMAGE CONTROL DURING DRYING PROCESS FOR HIGHLY SHRINKABLE MATERIALS
Alumina gels have high initial moisture content and their shrinkage during drying is generally very large (50%).During this volume decrease, tensile and compressive stresses take place and cracks can appear and lead to breaks. The 3D numerical model takes into account two kinds of moisture transport rates: firstly, periphery evaporation of solvent with ideal shrinkage where the material remains saturated.Secondly, the evaporation takes place inside the body and the material does not still exhibit shrinkage. The mathematical model involves a damage law to assess the probability of cracks.Air temperature and its relative humidity are driven to minimize the damage.
