Population balance modeling of moisture content distributions in semi-batch fluidized bed drying

In this work a numerical model was developed to predetermine the behavior of spherical particles in semi-batch fluidized bed drying.Since the residence time of particles in a semi-batch fluidized bed differs significantly, the property of interest,in this case the moisture content, also varies in a wide range.Due to this fact, the distributed characteristics are modeled using population balances.A bypass model is used in which the airflow is separated into suspension gas containing particles and bypass gas without particles,so as to take the link between solid and gas phase into consideration. In addition semi-batch drying experiments have been performed for validation issues.Hence, moisture measurements of single particles by dint of nuclear magnetic resonance technology (NMR) have been carried out in order to detect the moisture content distribution and thus enable a comparison between the simulated and the measured distribution.
