PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF A HEAT PUMP DRYER OPERATED IN PARTIALLY OPEN MODE

A fixed-bed dryer for medicinal plants was studied theoretically and in industrial practice.A simple simulation model describing batch-type heat pump drying was developed.Simulation results showed satisfactory agreement with the measurements.Internal cross-flow heat exchangers increased the performance of the heat pump dryers considerably.A series of numerical simulations for different operating conditions was performed demonstrating primary energy savings.Almost all ambient air conditions relevant for the drying season in Germany were covered in the analysis. The partially open mode was found to be approximately 20 % more energy-efficient than the closed cycle mode of operation.
