ADVANCED EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS OF INDUSTRIAL COUNTER CURRENT SPRAY DRYING PROCESS

  Highly turbulent air flow,robust agglomeration,intensive heat and mass transfer,high process temperature,short drying time and kinetics of the process difficult to investigate and reproduce in the laboratory cause complexity of the industrial scale counter current spray drying process.To describe the countercurrent drying process adequately,it is necessary to determine the thermal effectiveness with a significant quantity of reliable experimental data.The aim of this work was to elaborate an experimental methodology for investigation of the full scale industrial counter-current spray dryer.In order to collect data on radial and axial air temperature distribution during normal operation of the dryer with wet particles present in the air separation of air from the particles was necessary.Development of a new concept of microseparator enabled dynamic measurements of gas temperature in industrial tower.Heavy duty anemometer with direction indicator enabled investigation of air velocity.The measurements of radial and axial air velocity and temperature distribution allowed to determine temperature and velocity profiles in the dryer.Air velocity at dryer inlets was measured with a anemometer in a separate experiments.Wall temperature distribution in the vicinity of hot air inlets was evaluated with a thermovision camera.The measurement of inlet and outlet streams parameters allowed to make mass and energy balances of the dryer.Results of measurement allowed to determine the consistent set of data for the analysis of the process,planning of the throughput increase and finally validation of counter-current spray drying CFD model.
