ASPECTS OF DRYING TECHNOLOGIES FOR LOW RANK COAL
As Clean Coal Technologies (CCT) will continue to be the dominant source of energy globally over at least the next five decades, much R&D effort is being devoted to upgrading coal technologies to minimize the carbon footprint and GHG emissions from related applications.Recently, low rank coals (LRCs with about 45% of the total global coal reserves) have become popular despite their high moisture content on mining which varies from 30% to as high as 66% and hence requires efficient drying. However, moisture re-absorption,increased risk of spontaneous combustion and dust formation make drying of LRCs a difficult and challenging task. There are several drying techniques used for coal drying which can also be applied for coal-biomass mixture, however, each technology has some advantages and limitations which are not always clearly mentioned in the literature for many reasons.Another proposed way to facilitate LRC drying is to mix it with biomass of different origin which can either ease the drying process or facilitate the post-processing of dried product in different forms to reduce the moisture re-absorption and the dust formation. In this paper we critically evaluate various drying techniques for coal and identify their strengths and weaknesses. This paper discusses some theoretical calculations for design of selected drying technique - screw conveyor dryer- for various throughputs and other operating variables. The paper will also present and discuss some recent results from the discrete element modeling study of a screw conveyor assembly.
