ENERGY EFFICIENCY INVESTIGATION OF INTERMITTENT PADDY RICE DRYER:MODELING AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDY

In this study, energy consumption of intermittent drying of paddy rice is evaluated.Firstly,a mathematical model including two separated parts is established to describe the moisture distribution within the grain for both the drying and tempering stages. The model, which was solved analytically,is proposed based on Ficks second law of diffusion within a single sphere. Then, the model parameter, herein moisture diffusivity, was estimated in Arrhenius form using experimental data obtained from a lab-scale fluidized bed dryer. Finally, the model was utilized in an optimization problem to minimize the total energy consumption. The optimization results showed that employing the tempering stages substantially reduces the energy consumption. Moreover, the first stage of drying was found to be the longest stage with a moderate temperature while the subsequent stages are shorter with higher temperatures.
