CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF LAB SCALE SPRAY DRIER PERFORMANCE

In product design of spray dried material, often small scale spray driers are used. The advantages of these lab scale apparatus lie in the small necessary volumes, low time requirements and its ease of use.The reliability of the results however, has been questioned continuously by process engineers. The attempt of this study was to quantify the value of such trials as well as its limits. Results of experiments of a lab scale spray drier of type Büchi B 290 (ex BüCHI Labortechnik GmbH,Essen,Germany) have been analyzed.Distilled water and Maltodextrin were taken as standard test material.Emphasis was put on heat balances and flow characteristics.Temperature profiles and heat losses data were acquired using an Infrared camera.Analysis of particle size and particle residence time distributions were conducted to critically analyze the drying process.
