THE IMPORTANCE OF DRYING AND PARTICLE SIZE OF SUGARCANE BAGASSE TO PRODUCE 2nd GENERATION ETHANOL

Sugarcane bagasse is the most important biomass available in Brazil for production of 2nd generation ethanol. It is a heterogeneous material containing cylindrical particles and spherical particles. The present work aims to study the influence of the particle size in the enzymatic hydrolysis of sugarcane bagasse.Comparison between wet and dry particles showed the need of biomass drying prior to any pretreatment of particle size reduction or separation. The fraction of fine particles of sugarcane bagasse presented the best results in the hydrolysis tests compared to milled sugarcane bagasse even with the latter presenting smaller particles than the former.
