PRECIPITATION OF PARTICLES WITH CONVECTIVE ANTISOLVENT VAPOUR

Antisolvent vapour was incorporated into the single droplet drying technique resulting in the precipitation particle formation mechanism. This method allows a large number of micron size particles to be produced from a single droplet. Two types of lactose particle morphologies were observed: dendritic particles and smooth microspheres. The dendritic particles can composed of straight needle-like dendrites or short entwined dendrites.A threshold in the antisolvent humidity condition was found which forms the transition point between the two morphologies.Observation of a smooth network like structure suggests that a ‘pinched off’mechanism coupled with the effect of surface tension might be one possible route in the formation of the precipitated smooth microspheres.
