Salinity Tolerance and Mechanisms in Salvia miltiorrhiza

Through soil culture method, six salinity levels (0,30,60,90,120,and 150 raM) were treated to Salvia miltiorrhiza.Salinity tolerance ability was evaluated by determining activities of superoxide disumutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD),contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) and soluble sugar, plant height, dry weight, and salt injury index of plants under salt stress.S.miltiorrhiza could grow normally under 30 mM NaCl,with low activities of SOD and POD,soluble sugar content, injury index and high dry weight compared to control. When salt concentration was higher than 30 mM,the indicators determined showed that it began to suffer a degree of salt damage.Activities of SOD and POD,MDA,and soluble sugar play important roles in the mechanisms of salt tolerance against salt stress.
