THE NEXT CHALLENGE IN EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING:ROBUST AND DISASTER RESILIENT STRUCTURES

In the seismic design of any structure or system the safety of occupants is of paramount importance. However,in the aftermath of recent earthquakes, worldwide attention has focused on the need for resilient structures and lifelines that are able to return to service quickly following a major earthquake. In this paper, engineering aspects of resilient structures are discussed, focusing on increasing the post-earthquake operability of structures and lifelines critical to a communitys needs after of a major earthquake and the ability of occupants to “shelter-in-place during repairs.
