INNOVATIVELY DESIGNED EXTERNALLY FRP REINFORCED EXPANSIVE CONCRETE BEAMS

The major cause of cracking in bridge decks, concrete pavements,as well as slabs on grade is restrained shrinkage of the concrete.Expansive concrete (EC) and fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) are explored to develop an innovative structural system as one possible method of delaying concrete cracking and eliminating steel corrosion.A series of coffee can tests were carried out to measure and compare the expansion of concrete from two candidate materials. The selected EC candidate mix was then optimized to get the maximum expansion as well as a decent concrete strength. The optimized expansive concrete mix was used to make FRP-expansive concrete beams. Both glass FRP (GFRP) sheets and carbon FRP (CFRP) sheets were used for comparison.Initial cracking loads and ultimate loads were compared for the proposed structural beams.
