EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH ON SEISMIC BEHAVIOR OF SPATIAL JOINTS IN A COMPOSITE FRAME CONSISTING OF CFST CRISSCROSS SECTION COLUMNS AND STEEL BEAMS

Three exterior joints in a composite frame consisting of CFST crisscross section columns and steel beams were designed and manufactured. An experimental research on their seismic behavior was performed under lateral cyclic loading. The study investigated joints failure mode, hysteretic behavior, and ductility.Among the joints,M J-S1,M J-S2 were designed according to the principle of strong component, weak node, and M J-S3 was designed based on strong column, weak beam.MJ-S1 and M J-S2 demonstrated similar failure modes. The panel zone yielded first, and the stiffening ring was pulled off.At last tube walls cracked and concrete was crushed.According to strong column, weak beam design principle,a weak-beam specimen yield and fractured, the beam had no obvious hysteretic behavior. The result indicated that the axial load ratio of the column had certain effect on both the strength and ductility of the connections. With the increase of axial compression ratio, the bearing capacity of the joints improved. However, the deformation capacity and ductility were compromised. It can be concluded that the tested connections in the study demonstrate good seismic performance.
