EARTHQUAKE GROUND MOTION PREDICTION AND ITS INFLEUCEN ON BUILDING STRUCTURES IN BHUTAN

Bhutan by its geological position lies in one of the most active seismic regions of the world. However,Bhutan has no seismic design code of its own.Current practice in Bhutan directly adopts the Indian seismic code for structure designs to resist seismic loads. The suitability of using Indian code to predict seismic ground motions and the consequences on structure design is not investigated. This study performs probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) to define ground motion intensities and design response spectra corresponding to different probability levels in Bhutan. The predicted ground motions are compared with those defined in Indian earthquake code, the adequacy of using Indian code in Bhutan is discussed.Responses of typical building structures to predicted earthquake ground motions for Bhutan and to those defined in Indian code are also calculated and compared. The implications of using ground motions defined in Indian code for earthquake resistant design of building structures in Bhutan are dicussed.
