OPTIMAL DESIGN OF VISCOELASTIC DAMPERS COUPLING ADJACENT UNEQUAL-HEIGHT STRUCTURES UNDER EARTHQUAKES

Optimal design of viscoelastic dampers (VED) coupled two adjacent unequal-height structures under earthquakes was investigated.First, optimal parameter expressions of the Kelvin model were used to calculate the total optimal stiffness and damping coefficient of VEDs.Then, using enumeration method and taking total kinetic energy of adjacent structures as optimization objective, the optimal placements of VEDs were determined. The results show that for different distributions of dampers, the optimal parameters of VEDs calculated by parametric studies are all consistent to the theoretical results. The optimal placements of VEDs were distributed placed on the third, the fifth and the tenth floors.Optimization on the locations of a certain number of dampers is important; optimization on the number of dampers has little effect on the ability of seismic response reduction.
