EXPERIMENT STUDY ON THE INFLUENCE FACTORS OF THERMAL STRESS OF BUILDING STEEL ELEMENTS

Most of steel structures are statically indeterminate structures. The compositions of a structure will give rise to thermal stress when exposed to non-uniform temperature.Thermal stress has grate influence on the resistance capability of members under fire conditions, which must be taken into account in a steel structural fire design and assessment. On the basis of literature analysis, the influence factors of thermal stresses of axial-restrained steel columns were pointed out. They were temperature increment, end restraint stiffness, slenderness ratio and initial stress ratio.A series of tests were carried out to study the thermal stress of axial restrained steel columns. The results showed that:The relationship between temperature increment of columns and its thermal stresses was a linear relation. The higher the temperature, the greater the thermal stress. Before buckling, the axial thermal stress increased with the increasing of restraint stiffness and slenderness ratio.Initial stress ratio was insensitive to thermal stress.
