DEFLECTION ANALYSIS OF Z-CORE SANDWICH PANELS UNDER BENDING IN WEAK DIRECTION
A Z-core sandwich panel is consisted of top and bottom facing plates and a series of Z-core stiffeners which are placed in one-way direction. The stiffness of a Z-core sandwich panel in the direction perpendicular to the placement of the Z-core stiffeners is relatively weak, and this direction is called weak direction.Using virtual work principle and compatibility conditions, equations for predicting the deflection of a Z-core sandwich under bending in its weak direction are derived with consideration of contact problem. These equations consider weak arrangement and strong arrangement of Z-core stiffeners, and they are obtained from unit load method in stTuctural mechanics, which avoids lengthy derivation of plate and shell theory. The accuracy of these equations are verified through comparing the estimated results with experimental data reported in literature. It is found that the simplified equations are proved to be reliable to provide enough accurate results, which can be used for design purposes.
