NUMERICAL STUDY ON THE BEHAVIOR OF RC COLUMNS CONSIDERING CONFINEMENT AND STRAIN RATE EFFECTS

In order to investigate the behavior of laterally confined square reinforced concrete (RC) columns under quasi-static and dynamic Ioadings,a static equivalent compressive stress-strain relation of concrete considering the confinement effect of stirrups is firstly proposed and then by combining the dynamic increasing factor of strength of concrete due to strain rate effect,a dynamic equivalent compressive stress-strain relation is formed.By introducing the stress-strain relation to the concrete plastic model in ABAQUS,a finite element models (FEM) are established to analysis the behavior of laterally confined short columns under both quasi-static load and dynamic loadings. For the static analysis,no strain rate effect was considered. The FEM models are validated with available test results of a number of RC specimens under both quasi-static load and dynamic loading. Results show that the model considering both the confinement and the strain rate effects can be employed to investigate further the response of laterally confined short columns under axial dynamic loadings.
