PASSIVE OPTIMAL CONTROL OF ADJACENT STRUCTURES UNDER EARTHQUAKE EXCITATION

An optimal design strategy of coupling adjacent structures connecting by discrete viscoelastic dampers (VEDs) is presented. The connecting VED is represented by the Kelvin model. The optimal parameters of two damper models linking two adjacent multi-storey structures are obtained based on a reducing order model, which are two generalized single degree of freedom (2-sdof) systems. Then the optimal placement of dampers is discussed. The numerical results demonstrate rationality of achieving the optimal value of VEDs for coupling adjacent multi-storey structures by using the first natural frequency and total mass of the original structures, and the improved genetic algorithm is effective to determine the optimal location of dampers. The optimal design method can help the engineers to select proper damper parameters and displacement of dampers conveniently during the preliminary design.
