A BROADBAND TWO-LAYER BULTER MATRIX FOR MULTI-BEAM ANTENNAS IN 3G/4G WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS
The design of a broadband double layer 4×4 butler matrix for multi-beam antennas in 3G/4G wireless commuications is presented in this paper,which can operate over wide frequency band.The design exploits the microstrip-slot technology to accomplish wideband-3dB slot coupled directional couplers and also uses a short transmission line to obtain broadband phase shifters.This designed beamforming network has a wide frequency band and does not use any crossovers,which are the main challenges in practical realizations of butler matrices.Results of the full electromagnetic simulations show that isolation characteristics less than-14dB and input reflection levels lower than-15.8dB are experimentally validated from 1GHz to 3GHz.Excellent amplitude and phase characteristics were obtained span 1.5GHz frequency band centered at 2GHz.All these characteristics reveal the design very attractive for multi-beam antenna in 3G/4G wireless commuications.
