Development of the low yield ratio welding consumables for high strength structure steels

A gas shielded arc welding wire was developed for high strength structure steels in this paper. The deposited metals have not only high strength (up to 1000MPa),but also have low yield ratio (0.76),which can meet the welding fabrication of the high strength structure steels.Microstructure examination showed that there are ferrite and bainite phase in the deposited metals, the former is the soft phase transformed from the supercooled austenite at high temperature, the latter is the hard phase transformed at lower temperature.Experimental results showed that the supercooled austenite decomposed incompletely at the ferrite transformation, due to the fast cooling velocity of the welding, the bainite transition occurred at lower temperature, the lower the transition temperature is,the more carbon atoms dissolved in the bainite, and the finely the microstructures is,therefore, the deposited metals have high strength.Because there is duplex phase in the deposited metal, the soft ferrite deformed firstly, then the hard bainite deformed when deformation occurred,so the low yield ratio presented in the deposited metals.
