Pretreatment of vitamin C wastewater using a magnetic polymer
This research investigates the feasibility of the pretreatment of vitamin C wastewater by using a new magnetic polymer to improve the biodegradability of vitamin C wastewater and low efficiency of biological treatment.Magnetic polymer is synthesized using magnetite (ferroferric oxide) and chitosan. The pretreatment efficacy using varying doses of magnetic polymer was investigated. Moreover, the effects of pH,temperature, stirring rate, and magnetic intensity on the flocculation efficiency were analyzed. The efficiency of flocculation was prominently improved to 99.6% using a magnetic polymer at optimal loadings (100 mgL-1 of Fe3O4 modified with 40 mgL-1 of chitosan). The removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, and phosphorus were 87.5%,64%,and 60%,respectively.The pH value and polymer dosage were found to have significant influence on the flocculation effect, whereas temperature change and stirring rate had slight influence. The flocculation and separation functions of magnetic polymer were caused by the cooperation between the netting and bridging effect of chitosan and the high magnetic response of Fe3O4.Magnetic polymer does not only have an impressive purification effect on VC wastewater but also helps increase the solid-liquid separation speed to create favorable conditions for future biological treatment with improved reliability and operational stability.
