Experiment Study on Spontaneous Combustion of Iron Sulfides in Oil Tank
With sulfur-contained oil tanks under chemical corrosions, chemical reactions would occur between the oxidation corrosion products (i.e.rust,with the major components of Fe2O3,Fe3O4 and Fe(OH)3) of the tank and hydrogen sulfide, sulfur, mercaptan sulfur and other active sulfur contained in the oil to produce highly oxidizing iron sulfide, which is liable to give rise to fire and explosions due to exothermic reactions. This paper simulates the natural oxidation of sulfur oil storage tanks,low-temperature wet H2S corrosion and corresponding products within sulfur-contained oil tanks. It makes an analysis on the temperature changing patterns during the sulfidation of Fe2O3,Fe3O4,Fe(OH)3,and their mixtures as well as in the process of natural oxidation process of sulfide. The research results indicate that ferrous sulfide generated from reactions between Fe2O3,Fe3O4,Fe(OH)3,and their mixtures with wet H2S under anaerobic conditions reveal a strong oxidation tendency. In the natural environment, violent chemical reactions might occur between the ferrous sulfide and oxygen contained in the air to release a lot of heat. The higher the content of Fe2O3 and Fe3O4,the greater the risk of spontaneous combustion would be.Moreover, the oxidation of iron sulfide in natural environment undergoes three phases,i.e.oxidation induction time, oxidation incubation time, and oxidation acceleration period.
